Colima

Southernmost of Mexico's western cultures of Jalisco and Nayarit. Colima was long thought of as being an agrarian culture with non-religious art depicting daily life. Today's thinking, that along with the other shaft tomb burial cultures, their art is as religious as any other.

Colima is best known for its finely finished red slipped figures, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, of all sizes and styles; and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. These were produced by the thousands and have found their way into almost every collection.

Some substyles, such as Autlan, Coahuayana, Pihuamo, El Chanal, Los Ortices, are distinctively different, but all maintain the general features of compactness of sculpture, smoothly burnished finish and minimal use of color; unlike Jalisco and Nayarit.
